Mexican History - Cinco de Mayo
The Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo (The 5th of May), is a day in which the victory of the Mexican army over the French in the battle of Puebla (*1862). Cinco de Mayo is oft mistaken as the holiday that signifies Mexican Independence Day; Mexico gained its freedom from Spain on September 15, 1810, not May 5th. An interesting side note about Mexican Independence - although history recognizes September 15th as the official date of freedom from Spain, Spanish soldiers were not told of Mexico's independence until 10 years later. They were forced to leave shortly after, in 1821. The battle of Puebla came on the heels of a number of bloody, violent wars. Mexico, finally free of Spanish rule in 1821, was still experiencing unrest and turmoil. When Florida was discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513, the peninsula was populated by a vast number of Indigenous tribes, many of whom had been there for over 12,000 years. During the first Spanish rule of Florida, most of these tribes died out due to their lack of immunity to diseases brought by the settlers, and several decades of conflict and enslavement reduced the populations even more.
